About the Tracks Out of Service Sign

When a railroad line has been abandoned or its use discontinued, MUTCD Section 8B.09 lets the crossing carry a TRACKS OUT OF SERVICE sign, so drivers who would otherwise have to stop — school buses, hazardous-materials trucks — know they don't. The sign has to come down as soon as trains run again, and once the tracks are removed or paved over, the crossing's signs go too.
