About the Grade Crossing Advance Warning Sign

The highway-rail grade crossing advance warning sign is the yellow circle with a black X and the letters R R — round, unlike every other warning sign, so it's recognized by shape alone. MUTCD Section 8B.04 places it ahead of a crossing, far enough back for drivers to slow and stop, except where the crossing is very close to an intersection or on some low-speed streets. For tracks just past an intersection, use the Grade Crossing with Intersection sign (W10-2, W10-3, W10-4).
