About the Stop or Yield Sign at a Grade Crossing

At a passive crossing — no flashing lights, no gates — MUTCD Section 8B.08 lets a STOP or YIELD sign be used with the Crossbuck so drivers must stop or slow and look for trains. It can be used where two or more trains a day use the crossing (averaged over the prior 12 months), or at other passive crossings after an engineering study. A Stop Ahead or Yield Ahead sign goes in advance when the criteria in Section 2C.29 are met.
